The City of Lebanon has been notified by the Kirksey Law Firm of Bolivar, Missouri, of the intent to take legal action on behalf of a Laclede County resident to change the name of Elm Street to Route 66, citing a state law passed by the Missouri State Legislature in 1999.
The City of Lebanon has taken many steps over the last twenty years to work with various Rt 66 advocates from across the state and the results of these efforts are evident when you travel Elm Street today. It is clear these efforts have been embraced and enjoyed by our residents.
The question at hand is simple for the City of Lebanon. Does the City of Lebanon pay the expenses associated with an unfunded mandate which does not embrace any traditional processes associated with the impact on local businesses and residents when the majority of those directly impacted by a street name change do not support this name change?
The City of Lebanon will continue to energetically support our residents and businesses along Elm Street and defend what our community has asked of us, which is this street will remain what is was named before it was Rt 66 and has been named since it was abandoned as a US Highway, Elm Street.
